With over 35 years of experience, Natural Lighting Products provides premium daylighting solutions across Australia. Familiarising yourself with industry terms will help you choose the right skylight for your property.

That’s why we’ve put together a glossary of terms to ensure you navigate your next skylight project with ease.

Australian Standards

Australian Standards are documents that set out specifications, procedures and guidelines to ensure that products, services and systems are safe, consistent and reliable. All our products have relevant Australian Standards certifications

Fire-Rated Sealant

This type of fire-resistant material seals openings and joints in fire-rated barriers, like skylights, walls, floors and ceilings. We use this material when installing our skylights to prevent the spread of fire or smoke through areas of the home. With a BAL-40 rating, INFINITI and Keylite products are equipped to protect your home from damage and embers in a bushfire attack.

Fixed Skylights

Fixed skylights cannot be opened, providing a clear view of the beautiful skies above all year round.

Flashing

This corrosion-resistant material controls, redirects, or prevents water from entering a structure. We use this waterproofing system to connect skylights with their surrounding roof material.

Glazing

Glazing is the glass component of a skylight, window or door. Most standard doors and windows are single-glazed, allowing for significant heat transfer between the outdoors and indoors. However, INFINITI and Keylite skylights are designed with high-performance double glazing, helping block external heat from entering homes.

Low-Emittance Coating

A low-emittance, or Low-E, coating is applied to a skylight to reduce heat transfer from outside to the interior of a property. Both INFINITI and Keylite skylights have a Low-E coating to let the maximum light in while blocking external heat.

Trimming

This is the process of using material to finish the interior edges of a skylight opening in a ceiling. Adding a decorative moulding or trim makes a skylight look complete, clean and polished.

Tubelights

Tubelights are made of a clear dome that collects sunlight for its reflective tube to transfer the sunlight downwards to a diffuser at ceiling level, which disperses the light in a room.

U-Value

U-Value measures a glazing’s thermal performance. The lower a U-Value is, the stronger a skylight’s ability to stop heat from being transmitted. With a U-Value of 1.0, Keylite skylights are our most thermally efficient products, with INFINITI skylights trailing closely behind with a U-Value of 1.5.

Vented Skylights

Vented skylights are hinged at the top and can be opened at the bottom to let fresh air inside. They significantly improve a space’s air quality, decrease condensation and help with temperature control.
