Fixed, Manual, or Electric Skylight – Which One Is Right For You?

Fixed skylights

Fixed skylights are a great cost-effective solution for increasing natural daylight in rooms that already have adequate ventilation. They are essentially an opening in the ceiling which is covered with either clear glass or acrylic material, allowing sunlight to stream in and giving you a great view of the skyline. Fixed skylights are a great option for rooms with high or unusually-shaped ceilings and are particularly effective in living areas or large, open-plan rooms. They also work well to brighten up dark hallways, kitchens, or bathrooms, although depending on the existing ventilation, an automatic or manual openable skylight may be preferable for rooms where there is likely to be a lot of moisture build-up. 

Manual skylights

A manual skylight or roof window has all the same benefits as a fixed skylight, and it can also be opened and closed using a winding handle. Skylights can usually only be opened partially in order to allow ventilation, whereas manual roof windows can be opened fully. Manual skylights or roof windows are the most cost-effective option for rooms where both light and ventilation are required. They can only be used in locations where the ceiling can be easily reached either by hand or with the rod supplied by the manufacturer.

Electric skylights

As their name suggests, electric skylights or roof windows can be opened and closed using a remote control. Most electric models also come fitted with a rain sensor which closes the window if it starts to drizzle. Electric skylights are the most convenient and user-friendly option that allows abundant light and ventilation which can be controlled with the touch of a button. Some electric skylights are powered by a solar panel that harnesses natural daylight to recharge the battery that powers the operator and control system. Electric skylights are a good option for applications where the ceiling is out of reach (even with a rod) or when you want the freedom of leaving your window open without worrying about closing it manually if it starts to rain.
